BIOGRAPHY

Valerio Adami (Bologna, March 17, 1935) is an Italian painter. Starting from an expressionist painting influenced by the work of Francis Bacon and then from an abstract painting - gestures, the problem of recovering the figured figure was posed, according to the modules of American Pop Art and in particular by Roy Lichtenstein, developing a sort of fantastic and ironic comics in which, in depersonalized interiors, we find trivial objects, taken as symbols, even sexual, of modernity. The style is distinguished by the use of a chromatic material in flat, smooth and continuous layers, inside the sharp black fences of the drawing.

Since 1954 Valerio Adami attends the Brera Academy in Milan, under the guidance of Achille Funi. In 1955 he made his first trip to Paris, where he came in contact with the painters Wifredo Lam and Roberto Sebastian Matta. In 1958, he took part in the Marzotto Award, winning it ex aequo, and in 1959 he held his first solo exhibition at the Galleria del Naviglio in Milan. He worked between London and Paris from 1961 to 1964, when he was present with a personal room at Documenta 3 in Kassel; in 1967 in New York he made a series of canvases that he would exhibit the following year at the Venice Biennale.

Since 1969 Valerio Adami has held personal exhibitions at the Studio Marconi in Milan; in 1985 he made the eight stained glass windows for the new Hôtel de Ville in Vitry-sur-Seine and he appeared in an anthological exhibition at the Center Pompidou in Paris; in 1980 he was selected by the National Bolaffi Art Catalog (No. 15) together with Giulio Paolini, Mimmo Paladino, Lucio Bulgarelli, Sergio Cassano and Gianfranco Goberti; in 1986 he took part in the XLII Venice Biennale and between this year and 1987 he created the two large panels for the atrium of the Gare d'Austerlitz in Paris; next are the five wall panels for Madison's First National City Bank and the large ceramic wall for the new school of fine arts in Cergy-Pontoise.

He took part in a series of retrospectives in Madrid in 1991, in Siena in 1994, in Bochum in 1997 and in Buenos Aires in 1998. The most recent personal exhibition, composed of works belonging to the collection of the same artist, was inaugurated in his presence. 12 October 2013 in Ravenna, at the MAR - Museum of Art of the city (12 October - 8 December 2013). His serigraph Untitled 1967 is kept at the Cantonal Art Museum in Lugano.
